Innovating Lung Cancer Care in Las Vegas: The Role of Lung Ablation at Desert Radiology
Desert Radiology–a Radiology Partners’ practice–has been at the forefront of imaging excellence in Southern Nevada, becoming the go-to practice for many of the most common and complex radiology needs for the community. As the radiology field continues to evolve and better serve patients, so do the offerings at DR. Interventional Radiology is an evolving field of medicine, Desert Radiology is leading the way specializing in providing minimally invasive procedures and treatments in the Southern Nevada community. Utilizing the power of advanced imaging (CT, MRI, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy), IR provides alternatives to traditional surgery, with better outcomes for various conditions and diseases that affect the organs, nervous system, vessels, urinary and GI tract.
DR is helping to transform the landscape of lung cancer care in Southern Nevada by providing a robust lung cancer screening program, partnering with major oncology networks in the region via tumor boards, and offering cutting edge 'Thoracic Ablation Program' which provides image-guided minimally invasive treatment/ablation for lung cancer. Steered by Dr. Sameer Rehman, cardiovascular and thoracic interventional radiologist at Desert Radiology, the practice and its expert IR team are at the helm of developing a cutting-edge lung ablation program in the ever-growing community of Las Vegas.
What is Lung Ablation?
Lung ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes either heat (radiofrequency or microwave) or extreme cold (cryoablation) to destroy cancerous tissue within the lungs. Using image guidance under CT scan; lung ablation is a therapeutic intervention aimed at precisely targeting and eliminating cancer cells by placing needle electrode into the tumor.
What are the benefits of Ablation?
Ablation tends to be a quicker, less invasive, low-risk procedure compared to traditional lung surgery with minimal potential complications and quick recovery time. Most of the patients are discharged from the hospital the very next day after the procedure and resume their normal activities within 5-7 days. One of the major benefits of lung ablation is the ability to preserve lung function, an important callout for patients with emphysema.
What sets lung ablation apart from traditional radiology techniques?
While diagnostic imaging plays a crucial role in identifying tumors and assessing disease progression, lung ablation takes it a step further by actively treating the cancer. By precisely targeting tumors with thermal or cryogenic energy, ablation offers a therapeutic alternative for patients who may not be candidates for surgery or who prefer a less invasive approach.
As one of the driving forces behind DR’s Lung Ablation Program, Dr. Rehman brings a wealth of expertise and passion to Southern Nevada. Dr. Rehman's dedication to patient-centric care is evident in every aspect of our Lung Ablation Program. From meticulous patient selection based on multidisciplinary evaluations to personalized treatment plans tailored to the needs of every individual patient, the goal is to provide the highest quality of care with compassion and expertise.
As DR continues to pioneer advancements in interventional radiology procedures and treatments, the practice remains steadfast in our mission to improve outcomes and enhance the quality of life for patients and our community.
