Dr. Richard Penfil received his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. In 1964, he earned his medical degree from Wayne State University, College of Medicine. Dr. Penfil completed his diagnostic radiology residency at USC Medical Center, LA County Hospital. From 1971 to 1975, Dr. Penfil was the Radiology Department head at Fountain Valley Community Hospital. He was also on the teaching staff at LA County General Hospital and Anaheim Memorial Hospital. He was founder and President of Medstone International, the only US manufacturer of lithotripters; a medical device that pulverizes kidney and gall stones.
Dr. Penfil has more than 30 years of experience in diagnostic radiology, including 15 years of experience in teleradiology. In 2005, Dr. Penfil joined Birch Medical Imaging in Newport Beach, California as a Partner and Diagnostic Radiologist; assisting in the opening of the corporation's first radiology facility. Prior to that, Dr. Penfil founded CT Screening International. The organization operated 13 screening centers; providing screenings to over 25,000 patients throughout New York, New Jersey and California. Dr. Penfil also served in the Military as a Senior Surgeon for the US Public Health Service, Food & Drug Administration.
Dr. Penfil joined Desert Radiology in 2017.
