Increase in Mammogram Appointments Prompts Additional Need for Specialists
By: Matt Grimes, Senior Vice President and COO of Desert Radiology
With the beginning of every new year comes new goals, and one of our goals at Desert Radiology is to enhance and develop our team of breast imaging specialists throughout 2021. Breast screenings remain a very vital component to yearly wellness checks, which is largely understood in our community and made evident by the significant number of scheduled appointments for mammograms.
Practice-wide, we average an approximate 6,000 mammograms per month totaling about 72,000 annually. These figures continue to be on the increase – an encouraging trajectory that proves a continual growth to our breast imaging specialist team.
Even throughout the pandemic, our mammogram appointments remained high as we performed more than 67,000 mammograms in 2020. We attribute these strong numbers to the rising fact that more women are aware and fully understand the importance of routine exams. In addition, technology advances and improvements have lessened the fear many women associate with mammograms.
Due to the innovation of mammogram equipment, the exams have become more comfortable for patients compared to years past – a critical development that has helped quell the reputation of mammograms being painful. At Desert Radiology, we use Genius 3D MammographyTM which allows our doctors to examine breast tissue layer by layer. This innovative tool helps detect 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduces false positives by up to 40 percent. This means one simple thing: early detection.
We are encouraged to know that patient awareness and choice are the drive behind our goal of continued growth of our breast imaging team. We are excited to add to our team of board-certified, fellowship-trained, highly skilled healthcare professionals who will continue to provide exceptional care to each and every patient that comes through our doors.
